* Sri Lanka police arrest over 200 drunk drivers in 24 hours

Apr 14, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Police said that 237 individuals were arrested by the police for driving under the influence during a 24-hour operation.

The police raid was conducted island wide in the 24 hour period from 6am on Saturday (April 13) to 6am today (April 14).

According to the police 6651 cases have been filed against motorists for various offenses.

The police launched a special 10-day operation island wide on 11th April to nab motorists driving under the influence during the festive season.

To date, 771 drunk drivers have been arrested and 26,425 cases on traffic offenses have been filed, the Police Media Spokesman's Office said.

Around 8,000 police officers have been deployed island wide to control traffic and prevent accidents during the festive season. Around 2400 police officers have been deployed in Colombo and suburbs to maintain road safety.

The special traffic raid will be in operation until April 20.
