Apr 13, Colombo: The Colombo Crime Division on Wednesday (April 11) has arrested an underworld member who was involved in an arms deal with a group of former Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) members.
The suspect, identified as Viduranga alias Viswa is a resident of Wellampitiya. He is a member of the Kaduwaela Samayan's underworld gang, a senior police officer said.
After underworld leader Samayan was killed in the attack on the prison bus in Kalutara on the orders of his rival Makadure Madush, 'Gotha Asanka' has been leading the gang. He is currently in jail on suspicion of several killings.
It has been revealed that 'Gotha Asanka', who is leading the Samayan's gang from the prison, is in close association with another underworld leader, 'Ganemulle, Sanjeewa'.
The Colombo Crimes Division says the two underworld leaders are engaged in the sale of firearms, which are being unearthed from the North by the former LTTE cadres.
The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) has arrested a group of former LTTE cadres involved in the arms racket as well as 12 subordinates of 'Gotha Asanka' and 'Ganemulle, Sanjeewa'. The suspects are being detained on detention orders and questioned.
During questioning, the suspects have revealed information on several underworld killings committed in Colombo and suburbs using former LTTTE cadres.
A plan to assassinate TNA parliamentarian Sumanthiran was also revealed during questioning and some equipment including a claymore bomb that were to be used for the purpose have been found, the CCD said. The finding has been reported to the courts.
The Colombo Crimes Division said Viswa was arrested when it was revealed that he has acted as an intermediary in selling the weapons recovered by the LTTE members.
The investigations have revealed that Viswa is the person who provided the information to kill Makandure Madush's business partner at the Hulftsdorp court premises according to the instructions given by Gotha Asanka from the prison by phone.
