Thu, Apr 11, 2019, 11:36 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police will launch a special ten-day operation today ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays to nab errant drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol.

Motor Traffic DIG Ajith Rohana said the operation will be carried out across the country for the next ten days until April 20.

Around 8,000 police officers have been deployed island wide to control traffic and prevent accidents during the festive season. DIG Rohana said 2400 police officers have been deployed in Colombo and suburbs to maintain road safety.

According to the official, 135 deaths have been reported in road accidents between April 10 and 20 last year and more than 120 have been injured. The police hope to prevent that situation this year, DIG Rohana said.
