Apr 09, Colombo: The final session of the Western Provincial Council was held today under the patronage of Chief Minister Isuru Devapriya, as the council's official term ends on 21st of April.
The 6th Western Provincial Council commenced its five-year term on April 22, 2014.
The term of office of the Southern Provincial Council will also end tomorrow and accordingly, the term of office of 8 provincial councils will expire by the 21st.
Although the term of office of the Provincial Council ended, the chairman of the Council will function in official duties further and the Governor will be given the responsibility of the Provincial Council. Sunil Wijeratne is the Chairman of the Sixth Western Provincial Council.
The Southern Provincial Council's seventh term will conclude tomorrow (April 10).
The term of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council ended on September 26, 2017 and the term of office of the Eastern Provincial Council ended on the September 30, 2017.
The term of office of the North Central Provincial Council ended on 1 October 2017. On the 8th of October of the same year the term of office of the Central Provincial Council ended and the North Western Provincial Council ended the term on the 10th, Northern Provincial Council's term ended on the 24th.
The term of office of the Uva Provincial Council is scheduled to end on October 8.
However, arrangements have not yet been made to hold the provincial council elections. With the planning of the new electoral system several issues have risen on the delimitation. Last year, a bill was tabled in parliament to resolve these issues.
