* Court orders CID to conclude investigations in Keith Noyahr case and direct to AG

Sept 26, Colombo: The Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court ordered the Criminal Investigations Department to complete the investigations in the abduction and assault of journalist Keith Noyahr as soon as possible.

Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate, Lochana Abeywickrama yesterday (25) ordered the Criminal Investigations Department to take steps to direct the case to the Attorney General to file charges.

The CID presenting a report told the court that a statement was obtained from the former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and summoned former Army commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to the CID yesterday (25) to obtain a statement.

The CID also told the court that a statement has been obtained from the lawyer Mohamed Jabir Mansoor who hospitalized Mr. Noyahr after he was released and recorded statements from four officers in the Dialog Company on the mobile phone records regarding the incident.

The CID informed the court that they received the response to the query sent to the current Defense Secretary and the responses have noted that the Army does not have any records on the Baduatta Detention Center.

The suspects in the case former Chief of Defense Staff, Maj Gen General Amal Karunasekara, Major Bulathatta, Hemachandra Perera, Prabath Weeraratne, Lasantha Wimalaweera, Nishantha Jayasinghe, Nishantha Perera,Chandra Jayasinghe appeared before court yesterday.

The case will be called again on December 11.

Keith Noyahr, the former defense writer and the Associate Editor of English weekly The Nation was abducted by unidentified men on 22 May 2008. He was found a day later badly beaten and with head injuries. Noyahr left the country following the attack.
