* Sri Lanka's Constitutional Council's term ends

Sept 22, Colombo: The official tenure of the Constitutional Council, Sri Lanka's constitutional authority, ended yesterday (21).

Under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, ten-member Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to the independent commissions such as bribery commission and election commission.

According to the Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Neil Iddawela, the terms of the Constitutional Council members, Chairman Karu Jayasuriya, members Prime Minister and the leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan, as well as recently appointed member, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe would not end.

The official term of appointed members is three years and accordingly, the terms of Minister Tilak Marapana, MPs WDJ. Seneviratne and Vijitha Herath, and civil society members A. T. Ariyaratne, Radhika Coomaraswamy and Shibly Aziz will end, Deputy Secretary General of Parliament said.
