Sept 18, Colombo: The next meeting of the five-member committee appointed to review make recommendations to hold provincial council elections is scheduled to meet again on the 20th of this month.
The meeting is to be held under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and with participation of all political party leaders.
The first meeting of the committee was held on the 7th under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Temple Trees.
During the meeting, the committee discussed the actions needed to be taken to expedite making the recommendations and presenting the report in parliament.
It was also decided to obtain observations and suggestions from all political parties represented in the Parliament.
The Committee appointed to make recommendations to hold provincial elections is chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The other members of the five-member committee are: Mr. RMAL Ratnayake, Mr. Periyasamy Muthulingam, Prof. Balasundaram Pillai and Dr. ASM Nawfal.
Following the defeat of the Report of the Delimitation Committee for the Delimitation of electorates in Provincial Councils in Parliament, political parties have agreed to provide full support to hold the provincial elections in January 2018 if the committee appointed by the Speaker and headed by the Prime Minister can provide relevant recommendations by mid-October.
