Sept 15, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court has sentenced a Kuwaiti man and a woman to jail for assaulting Sri Lanka Customs officers at main Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.

A magistrate sentenced the 32-year-old woman and her 29-year-old male partner on Friday to six months in jail suspended for five years, AFP reported. The couple was also fined Rs. 138,000.

The Kuwaiti couple has attacked the Customs officers at the airport in July when they tried to stop the couple smuggling a pet dog against Sri Lanka's strict quarantine rules on pet animals.

Sri Lanka police arrested the woman and her male partner arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo on Friday for attacking Sri Lanka Customs officers after they tried to stop the couple smuggling a pet dog against Sri Lanka's strict quarantine rules.

Bringing pets into the island without quarantine clearance can lead to the forfeiture of the animal as well as a fine of up to 100,000 rupees ($625).

Customs spokesman Vipula Minuwanpitiya said the pet dog was confiscated and later given back to the couple to be taken out of the country.
