Sept 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a Sri Lankan passenger who was attempting to smuggle in gold biscuits worth Rs 20.8 million, Acting Customs Media Spokesperson Vipula Minuwanpitiya said.
The 37-year-old resident of Temple Tao area in Hatton has arrived on an Indigo Air flight from Chennai at around 8:30 this morning.
When he was examined on suspicion, Customs officials found 31 gold biscuits weighing 3.2 kilograms carefully concealed in his underwear and his shoes.
Acting Customs Media Spokesman Vipula Minuwangoda said that the seized gold biscuits are worth Rs. 1,749,300.
The arrest was made by Assistant Superintendents of Customs, DNC Abayanayaka, AKR Samanjith, KB Bandara, AMGD Alahakoon and PHDP Chandrasekera.
Further investigations are being conducted under the directions of Additional Director General of Customs Sri Lanka Stanley Senaratne.
