* Police Special Task Force for Colombo prisons also from today

Oct 22, Colombo: Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel will be deployed to inspect the visitors to prisons in Colombo from today, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms Bandula Jayasinghe said.

Accordingly, STF officers will be deployed to the Welikada, Magazine and Colombo Remand Prisons.

Meanwhile, a protest staged by a group of inmates of the Angunakolapelessa Prison against the deployment of the STF personnel at the Prison is continuing.

About 100 prisoners have climbed up a tower at the prison premises and staged the protest police Special Task Force and prison officials inspecting the food and other items brought to them by visitors.

The protesters are also demanding the transfer of the prison superintendent.

However, the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms stresses that the decision taken by the government to deploy Special Task Force personnel for the security at prisons will not be changed.
