Thu, Oct 18, 2018, 07:34 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 18, Colombo: Following the remarks made by President Maithripala Sirisena that Sri Lanka parliament waste the most amount of food in the country, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has instructed the relevant officials to take steps to minimize the food wastage in parliament.

A statement issued by the Speaker's Office said the Speaker soon after he was appointed took necessary measures to ensure that food is supplied in parliament with maximum frugality. This step was able to reduce the expenses at the time considerably.

However, in light of President's recent remarks about the wastage of food in parliament, the Speaker has instructed the relevant officials to re-examine the food supplying process in Parliament once again.

Speaking at the ceremony to mark World Food Day on Tuesday, President Maithripala Sirisena has pointed out that a majority of the MPs do not attend the sessions at Parliament and the most of the food prepared daily, therefore is wasted.
