* Sri Lanka Customs nab Norwegian national smuggling gold jewellery worth Rs. 7.6 million

Oct 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake on Tuesday have arrested a Norwegian national who was attempting to smuggle in gold jewellery worth over Rs 7.6 million.

The Norwegian national, who had arrived from Norway through Singapore, has smuggled the gold jewellery weighing 400 grams concealed in a box of foreign liquor bottles and in his clothes.

The Customs say the gold stock was hidden in the box of liquor bottles to mislead the authorities.

The jewellery consignment was confiscated and further inquiries are being carried out.

Meanwhile a Sri Lankan passenger was arrested by the airport customs officials for illegally bringing foreign cigarettes worth Rs. 1 million.

The suspect who arrived at the Katunayake International Airport from Dubai last night has brought 19,000 cigarettes in 92 cartons.

The 32-year-old suspect is a resident of Mawathagama. The stock of cigarettes was confiscated and the suspect was thoroughly reprimanded.
