Oct 15, Colombo: The Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel will be employed from today to provide security in the country's prisons, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms, Bandula Jayasinghe said.

In the first stage it is planned to deploy 300 Special Task Force personnel in three prisons. Accordingly, 200 STF personnel will be attached to the Welikada and Magazine prisons and one hundred soldiers will be attached to the Angunakolapelessa Prison from October 15.

Mr. Jayasinghe emphasized that the measure is taken to prevent illegal items from entering prisons, enhance security and curb racketeering operations and other illegal activities in prisons.

Deployment of STF personnel was scheduled to commence on October 1st, but due to a delay in repairs of their barracks the deployment to prisons was postponed until October 15, the official said.
