* Consumer Affairs Authority imposes maximum retail price for sugar

Oct 12, Colombo: The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) today imposed maximum retail prices for unpacketed and packeted white sugar with effect from Friday.

Issuing a statement, the CAA said that the maximum retail price has been imposed through two Gazette notifications.

According to the Gazette notifications, the maximum retail price of 1kg of unpacketed white sugar is Rs.100 whilst 1 kg of packeted white sugar will be Rs. 105.

The Importerís Maximum Wholesale Price of 1 kg of sugar will be Rs.92.

The Order shall come into effect from 12th October, 2018.

The government earlier said it has decided to take strict action under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act if importers and distributors increase the retail price of sugar while the sugar prices drop in world market and if the need arises, the maximum retail price will be reinstated,
