Wed, Oct 10, 2018, 07:26 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 10, Colombo: The term of office of the North Western Provincial Council ends today at midnight. Accordingly, the powers of the North Western provincial council will also be vested with the respective Governor.

At present the terms of office of four other provincial councils have also expired, and the governors of those provinces are in charge of their administration.

The official term of office of the Central Provincial Council was terminated on Monday. (October 08).

The official term of the Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern provincial councils ended in September last year while the term of office of the Northern Provincial Council is due to end on the 25th.

The tenure of the other three provincial councils will end next year.

The term of office of the Southern Provincial Council ends on the 10th of April next year and the term of office of the Western Provincial Council ends on April 21st.

The official term of the Uva Provincial Council is due to end on the 8th of September next year.

Elections to the Provincial Councils whose terms expired are being delayed until the political parties come to an agreement on which electoral system to use for the elections based on the Delimitation Report.

The Report of the Delimitation Committee for the Delimitation of electorates in Provincial Councils was defeated in the parliament in August and the Speaker of parliament Karu Jayasuriya has appointed a committee to make recommendations for provincial elections.

Political parties have agreed to provide full support to hold the provincial elections in January 2019 if the committee appointed by the Speaker and headed by the Prime Minister can provide relevant recommendations by mid-October.
