Wed, Oct 10, 2018, 10:57 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 10, Colombo: Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the gazette notification will be released soon to fill the teacher vacancies at all national schools.

In response to a question raised by MP Ananda Aluthgamage in Parliament on Tuesday (09), the Minister said it is expected to obtain the approval of the Public Services Commission and fill the vacancies by December.

In addition, steps will be taken to double the number of student teachers recruited for the National Colleges of Education from January of next year solving the problems that prevailed for years in admitting new students to National Colleges of Education.

Accordingly, Minister Kariyawasam said the number of students to be recruited to the teachers' training schools will be increased to 8000 from the current 4000.

He added that the government has taken steps to set up new teacher training faculties in the country. At the beginning of the current government, only 3,000 students were enrolled to the training faculties. Currently around 5,000 students are being recruited.

The Minister stressed that the shortage of teachers at country's schools can be resolved within two years.
