* IGP leads a team to investigate police officers' killing in the East
Fri, Nov 30, 2018, 11:14 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police chief, Inspector General Pujith Jayasundara, led a team of detectives to Batticaloa after two police officers manning a checkpoint were found shot dead in execution style.

The team led by the IGP includes Director of Crimes Investigation Department (CID) Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ravi Seneviratne, and the Director of the Police Legal Department, Ruwan Gunasekara.

They will meet with police chiefs in Batticaloa today and discuss the security situation.

According to authorities victims had their hands tied behind their backs and had been shot in the head. Their weapons had also been taken.

The officers have reportedly been identified as 28-year-old Ganesh Dinesh, a Tamil police officer from Kalmunai and 35-year-old Niroshan Indika Prasanna, a Sinhalese officer from Galle.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the shooting shattered the relative calm in the region where fighting between troops and Tamil rebels ended over a decade ago, AFP reported.
