* Sri Lanka Parliamentary Select Committee approved by vote, opposition shows majority again

Nov 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka parliament today approved the composition of the Parliament Select Committee with a majority vote this morning while the parliamentarians of President Maithripala Sirisena's minority United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government boycotted the vote.

Following the vote taken electronically by name, the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya informed the House that 121 MPs voted in favor of the composition of the Parliament Select Committee.

A total of 116 members had voted electronically while another five MPs voted by roll call due to technical issues.

The governing party demanded a majority of appointments in the 12-member Select Committee should be given to the UPFA.

However, the opposition parties, including UNF, JVP and TNA have requested the allocations to be made equally for the two major parties.

The Speaker announced that the Select Committee will consist of five members each from the UNF and UPFA while one member each from the JVP and TNA.

The UNF and JVP have called for a vote and when the Speaker announced the vote, the governing party MPs have walked out of the Chamber boycotting the vote. In protest.

MPs Dinesh Gunawardena, S.B. Dissanayake, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mahinda Samarasinghe and Wimal Weerawansa will represent UPFA in the Select Committee.

MPs Lakshman Kiriella, Rauff Hakeem, Rishad Bathiudeen, Mano Ganesan and Patali Champika Ranawaka will represent the United National Front (UNF).

JVP MP Vijitha Herath and TNA MP Mavai Senathirajah are the other two members.

At the commencement of every Session, the Selection Committee is appointed to consider the number, function and constitution of Consultative Committees and Legislative Standing Committees and to nominate members to serve upon the Committees for Special Purposes.

The Committee of Selection consists of the Speaker who will be the Chair and twelve Members including the Leaders of political parties or their nominees to be nominated by Parliament at the commencement of each Session.
