* Senior police officer investigating high profile crimes transferred to save the criminals - MP
Mon, Nov 19, 2018, 12:31 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 19, Colombo: A highly capable senior police officer, who successfully investigated a number of high-profile crimes committed during the previous Mahinda Rajapaksa regime, has been transferred from the Criminal Investigations Department (ICD) to save the criminals, United National Party MP Harin Fernando said.

The Officer-In-Charge of the Organized Crime Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department Inspector Nishantha Silva has been transferred with immediate effect to normal police duties at the Negombo Police Division allegedly on the orders of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Speaking at a media briefing late today at the Temple Trees, the UNP Spokesman said the transfer of a talented police officer is regrettable and also the officer's security is threatened due to the transfer.

Expressing his views, MP Ajith P. Perera said Nishantha Silva is a highly competent officer, who has resolved a number of serious crimes.

"The Police is now under the Ministry of Defense. Is the IGP not ashamed to transfer this officer in compliance with the illegal orders? Did they seize the government to transfer talented police officers?"

Following the ouster of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in violation of the Constitution, President Maithripala Sirisena took the Law and Order Ministry and hence the police under his purview.

IP Nishantha Silva has investigated a number of high profile crimes including the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickremetunga, abduction of 11 Tamil youths by Sri Lanka Navy officers and assaults on journalists resulting in arrests of the perpetrators in most cases. All these serious crimes were committed during the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's regime.
