* Speaker informs President of the passing of no-confidence motion by a vote by name

Nov 16, Colombo: The Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has officially informed the President Maithripala Sirisena that a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the government was passed today in parliament by a majority vote called by name.

The vote was taken according to a decision reached at the discussion held by the Speaker and leaders of the political parties with the President on Thursday (November 15).

Following the opening of the parliamentary session today, JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka moved the no-faith motion and MP Vijitha Herath seconded.

The Speaker has taken steps to officially inform the President that the resolutions were passed in parliament today in accordance with Standing Orders of the Parliament.

The Speaker informed the President that the second resolution on the motion tabled on 14th November was adopted by the Assembly today and accordingly, as the resolution states, the Assembly has no confidence in the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa or the cabinet of ministers and government appointed on or after 26th October 2018.

The list of the signatures of 122 parliamentarians who voted in favor of the no-faith motion was also sent to the President, the Speaker's Office said.
