Nov 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka's former President and Prime Minister of caretaker government Mahinda Rajapaksa has left the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and obtained the membership in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
The former President received membership from the Chairman of SLPP Porf. G.L. Peiris during an event this morning.
A group of former parliamentarians representing the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have also obtained membership of the SLPP along with Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Former President's son Namal Rajapaksa also joined the SLPP yesterday in order to face the upcoming General Election.
"We will strive to create a broader coalition with many stakeholders under the leadership of Maithripala Sirisena & Mahinda Rajapaksa to face the upcoming General Election and come out victorious," Namal Rajapaksa said in a Twitter post.
Several other SLFP parliamentarians have also indicated that they will join the SLPP to become a broader coalition to win the upcoming election.
