Nov 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a Sri Lankan passenger who was attempting to smuggle in gold jewellery worth over Rs 8.9 million.

According to the Customs officials, the suspect, a resident of Kandy, was arrested on suspicion upon arrival from Singapore around 11 am today. He was arrested at the departure lounge when he attempted to leave through the Green Channel.

Upon inspection, officials have found 1.49 kg of gold jewelry in his possession. The seized jewellery is estimated to worth over Rs 8.9 million.

The Airport Customs officials are conducting further investigations.
