Nov 03, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has assured the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, that Sri Lanka's new prime minister has been appointed in accordance with the powers vested in him under the constitution.

The President's Media Division said the President in a "very cordial" phone conversation on Thursday afternoon briefed the UN Secretary-General on the political situation that has arisen in Sri Lanka.

President Maithripala Sirisena further stated that Sri Lanka's new prime minister has been appointed in accordance with the constitution.

The President has assured the UN Chief that work on reconciliation and reforms will be successfully carried out under the new government and he is always committed to strengthen democracy.

The President has said that no violent incidents have been reported in relation to the situation that has risen in Sri Lanka and some individuals are spreading false propaganda for political gains.

The President further said that there will be a resurgence of stability following the reconvening of parliament in the near future.

The President's Media Division said the Secretary-General appreciated Sri Lanka's continued commitment to democracy and reconciliation.
