* Sri Lankan President instructs officials to continue development projects amid political crisis

Nov 02, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena instructed government officials to diligently continue the development program unhindered by the current political crisis in the country.

The President advised the officials not to be hindered by the political situation in the country and carry out the development work that needs to be completed by the end of this year properly and efficiently.

Addressing the Polonnaruwa District Coordinating Committee meeting at Polonnaruwa District Secretariat this morning (02), the President said the year 2019 will be declared as the 'Year of Environment Conservation' in order to make the Government's program to increase the forest density in the country more effective.

The President said he hopes to complete a great deal of work under the program implementing planting programs island-wide for environmental conservation and expects the active participation of people's representatives, public servants, schoolchildren and all citizens in this process.

The discussion was convened to inquire into the progress and future development plans of the Polonnaruwa district.

The development work in the fields of education, health, drinking water, road development, irrigation, agrarian services, agriculture, livestock development, wildlife, land and housing in the district and their progress were reviewed.

The President also inquired from the officials about the method of compensating farmers whose crops were destroyed due to last drought.

The President said that a program will be prepared to provide seed paddy free of charge to the farmers whose paddy lands were destroyed during the Yala season due to drought.

The President instructed the officials to immediately formulate a circular to correct the shortcomings in the process of compensating farmers for crop damages caused by the wild animals.

The program for planting 10 million plants under the National Environmental Conservation Program is being implemented currently nationwide and the President inquired about the implementation of the program in the Polonnaruwa district.

The progress in the implementation of the Grama Shakthi People's Movement for poverty alleviation program in the Polonnaruwa district as well as the performance of disaster management projects were also addressed,

Progress in the Polonnaruwa Urban Trade Complex was also reviewed.

President Sirisena also distributed compensation allowance to 25 families, who have lost their residences to the construction of the four-lane highway between Maradankadawala - Habarana Thirikkondiyaamadu' under the 'Pibidemu Polonnaruwa' Program.

Many local government representatives from the Polonnaruwa District and Polonnaruwa District Secretary Panduka SB Abeywardena also participated in the occasion.
