July 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka's elite police Special Task Force (STF) today arrested five people and thwarted an attempt to kill a prisoner's wife when she was visiting her husband at the Colombo main Welikada Prison.
The Organized Crimes Prevention Division of police has received information of a plant to kill the wife of the prisoner while she was visiting the prison to see her husband.
Following the information, the police have deployed STF officers clad in civilian clothes near the Welikada Prison.
The STF officers have observed a suspicious person at a bus stand near the prison receiving a telephone call and arrested him along with another person who had come with him on a motor cycle.
Upon searching the suspects, the STF officers have found a live grenade with one of the suspects.
According to the information obtained from the suspects, the police took action to search a three-wheeler which was parked close to the scene.
However, the three wheeler had fled towards Dematagoda and the STF officers chased the three wheeler and caught it near the Dematagoda Bridge.
The officers found a live grenade, a machete and more than 2 grams of heroin in the three wheeler.
The STF officers have arrested the five suspects who were attempting the murder of the inmate's wife.
