* Sri Lanka police arrest a Buddhist monk for killing a cop

July 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka police today arrested a Buddhist monk who allegedly strangled a police constable when he came to execute an arrest warrant against the monk.

Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the police officer attached to Ratnapura Police minor complaints unit had visited the Sambuddharama Temple in Gallanda, Ratnapura this afternoon to inquire about a complaint against a resident monk at the Temple.

The 37-year-old monk identified as Konwalane Dhammasara Thera who lived alone in the temple has strangled the unarmed police officer with his bare hands and stabbed him with a knife.

Nearby residents who heard the policeman's cries had come to the temple and taken him to the hospital and informed the police. The police officer has succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Ratnapura police responding to the residents' information found the monk at the temple. The police inspector at the Ratnapura police had also come to the temple.

When the police came the monk had taken a hand grenade and the officers had subdued the monk hitting his hand, police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

According to the police the monk has five arrests warrants against him and the 53-year-old police officer was executing one of the warrants when he was killed.
