* Government has solved many problems of the farming community - President

July 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena says that regardless of whatever allegations made by the political opponents, this era can be considered as a fortunate period for the agriculture economy of the country.

The President further said that the Government has been working in a systematic and comprehensive manner over the past three and half years to provide solutions for the water shortage faced by the farmers for a long period of time.

President Sirisena made this statement while participating in the opening ceremony of the Welikanda new Agrarian Services Center on Monday.

Expressing his views further President Sirisena said that the present government is committed to ensure the prosperity of the farming community and their economy without allowing their future generations to be affected by the hardships and sufferings faced by them.

Speaking on the development activities of the Welikanda area, President Sirisena said that the Welikanda Drinking Water Supply Project, which was launched to solve the drinking water issue of the people in the area, will definitely be completed by the end of next year.

'While some expect short-term solutions in the development process, at present development programmes are being implemented with a comprehensive plan and a future vision', the President said that adding there is no uncertainty in the country as certain media try to project, and the present government is fulfilling a large number of works as a Government, and emphasized that responsibilities towards the country and its people will be fulfilled successfully facing challenges.

The amount spent on this Agrarian Services Centre, which was built with every facility under "Pibidemu Polonnaruwa" district development program was Rs. 13 million.

The President who unveiled the commemoration plaque and opened the Agrarian Services Centre went on an observational visit of the premises.

The President also planted a plant in the premises of the Agrarian Services Centre.

The Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board provided compensation to farmers for the damaged crops due to inclement weather and the checks were handed over by the President to the recipients. Agricultural Toolkits were also distributed by the President.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Deputy Minister Angajan Ramanathan, and the public representatives of the area and Agriculture Ministry Secretary B. Wijeyrathna, Commissioner General of Department of Agrarian Development W.M.B. Weerasekara, Polonnaruwa district Agrarian Development Assistant Commissioner B.M.C.H. Kumarihami were present in this event.
