July 05, Colombo: The Government has planned to implement a rapid Rural Development Project called "Gamperaliya" covering all the districts in the country for the next two years.
As a result of the slow economic growth due to the damages caused to the infrastructure facilities by the adverse weather conditions in recent years and various other reasons many people have faced inconveniences in their livelihood development.
Therefore, the government has decided to take immediate measures to accelerate economic growth by improving the infrastructure facilities and to develop the livelihood of the people, a cabinet statement said.
The government has planned to implement a fast-track rural development program Gamperaliya to develop irrigation, rural roads, schools, sanitary facilities and playgrounds, Sathipola, green park, electricity, renovation of religious and archaeological sites, housing development, issuing land deeds and entrepreneurship in all districts of Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, the proposed program is expected to be implemented for a period of two years starting from the third quarter of 2018.
The total Investment of this project is Rs. 65.811 billion. Each Divisional Secretariat will be provided Rs.200 million for the year 2018 and the project will be commenced in 3rd quarter of 2018.
Accordingly, Cabinet approval was granted for the proposal made by the Minister of Finance and Mass Media, Mangala Samaraweera to expedite the proposed 'Gamperaliya' rural development program.
