* Sri Lanka's beleaguered State Minister decides to resign from post temporarily
Thu, Jul 5, 2018, 09:21 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka's beleaguered State Minister of Child Affairs Vijayakala Maheswaran has decided to resign from her post temporarily, state media reports said.

She has reportedly disclosed this while making a special statement to the Tamil language Vasantham TV channel of the ITN this morning.

The State Minister came under fire from her own party as well as from other political parties for making a controversial statement at a public function in Jaffna recently, calling for the reorganization of the outlawed terrorist group LTTE in order to curb the rising crime in the North.

State Minister and UNP Jaffna district parliamentarian Vijayakala Maheswaran has said that she accepts that her statement was wrong according to the oath she has taken as a minister of the government.

Maheswaran said she had discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Accordingly Vijayakala Maheswaran told the Vasantham TV that she decided to resign from the post of State Minister until an inquiry was carried out regarding the irresponsible statement she made.

It has been reported that the Prime Minister has asked the President to remove Vijayakala Maheswaran from the state minister post until an investigation is completed. However, the report was not confirmed by the Prime Minister's Office or the President's Office.
