Dec 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Parliament is scheduled to convene at 1.00 p.m. today for the first time after the reinstatement of United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is scheduled to chair a Party Leaders' meeting at 12.00 p.m. to decide on the business of Parliament this week.
As the Cabinet of Ministers has not yet taken oaths, only the Prime Minister will be assigned a seat, Parliament Deputy Secretary General Neil Iddawela said.
The seating arrangement of the Chamber for others will be in accordance with the seniority of the members of Parliament. After the appointment of the cabinet of ministers seats will be assigned accordingly, the official said.
It has been reported that the UNP has been assigned seats in the government side and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MPs have been assigned seats of the Opposition.
A final decision has not been taken regarding the opposition leader position. The Deputy Secretary-General says a decision will be taken after the party leaders meeting.
State newspaper Daily News reported according to the UNP sources that about 10 UPFA MPs are expected to join the UNP side.
The public gallery and the Speaker's special guest gallery will be reopened under certain conditions, Speaker's Office said.
