* Disciplinary inquiry against teacher arrested for helping a student to cheat at GCE O/L examination

Dec 08, Colombo: The Education Ministry has launched a disciplinary inquiry in addition to the police inquiry against a teacher who was arrested for helping a candidate sitting for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination to cheat by texting him the answers.

The police arrested both the female teacher and the student, who was a private candidate taking the national exam in Balangoda.

The student has used a mobile phone to communicate with the teacher who was on examination duty at another school during the O/L English paper given on Thursday. The female teacher had reportedly texted the answers for the English paper to the student during the exam.

The suspects have been released on bail yesterday (07) when they were produced before the court.

The disciplinary inquiry is in addition to the police investigation and is being carried out under the supervision of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Education Director. Statements have reportedly been recorded already from several of the connected parties.

Commissioner General of Examinations, Sanath B. Poojitha said that Department of Examinations has also commenced a separate inquiry into the incident and the according to the Public Examinations Act of Sri Lanka the suspects will be penalized for their fraudulent acts.
