* Customs nab two Sri Lankans smuggling illegal cigarettes worth Rs. 2.6 million

Dec 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs officials have arrested two Sri Lankan passengers at the Katunayake Airport early this morning for attempting to illegally bring a stock of cigarettes into the country from the UAE.

Officers of the Narcotics Control Unit of the Sri Lanka Customs had seized the foreign cigarettes and arrested the suspects.

The suspects are businessmen aged 48 and 46 years and residents of Puttalam. They had arrived at the Katunayake airport at around 4.30 am today from the United Arab Emirates.

Customs officials arrested them when they attempted to leave though the Green Channel without declaring any items.

The suspects have brought 242 cartons containing 48,000 cigarettes. The seized cigarette stock is estimated to be worth Rs. 2.62 million.
