Dec 02, Colombo: Wildlife Conservation Department officials have launched a probe into the killing of a tusker in the Udawalawe National Park.
A 12 year-old tusker, identified as Mugalan has been shot near the Udawalawe tank inside the park, a senior wildlife officer said yesterday.
The tusker suffered gunshot wounds to his forehead and has succumbed to his injuries Friday night. He was found dead on the park's boundary yesterday.
Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation Chandana Sooriyabandara said the elephant died due to the injuries caused to its head.
Sooriyabandara said wildlife officials have lodged a complaint in this connection with the Hambegawmuwa police and made submissions to the Embilipitiya Magistrate's court.
