Dec 01, Colombo: The United National Party (UNP) has officially informed President Maithripala Sirisena and the Leader of Tamil National Alliance that the party has unanimously nominated leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for the position of Prime Minister.

With the official announcement that TNA will support the nominee of the UNP, the party thanked the TNA for their support during the ongoing crisis and informed them that the party remains unanimous in its support for Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

In a letter addressed to the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan and copied to the President, UNP Chairman MP Kabir Hashim stated, "I write to you to inform you that Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, MP, is the nominee of the United National Party for the position of Prime Minister."

The UNP said Ranil Wickremesinghe now officially commands support of 117 parliamentarians of the 225-member legislature with the support of 14 TNA parliamentarians who had previously written to the President informing that they will support a UNF/UNP nominee to the Prime Minister post.
