* Fishing boat missing in southern seas with 11 fishermen onboard

Aug 20, Colombo: A fishing boat with 11 fishermen onboard reported to have met with an accident in the southern seas near Hikkaduwa and the fishermen have gone missing.

The boat with the 11 fishermen has left the Ambalangoda fisheries harbor around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The Navy has received the information that the boat was missing at around 7:25 p.m. last night.

The Navy says that there is no information regarding the fishing vessel or the fishermen. The Navy has dispatched two Dvora vessels and one water jet to search for the fishing boat and the fishermen.

The fishermen have called their families around 5:45 p.m. yesterday and informed the families that their boat got hit by a wave. However, all contacts with the fishermen have been lost after 9 pm.

The police have taken steps to inform the Disaster management Center and the Navy about the incident. Accordingly, the Navy has launched an operation to locate the fishing vessel and the fishermen.
