* Landslide risk in Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and Gampaha districts

Aug 18, Colombo: The Disaster Management Center (DMC) says the landslides warning issued yesterday for the Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya and Gampaha districts is still in effect until this evening and requests the people to be vigilant if the rains continue.

DMC Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said the Pelmadulla and Eheliyagoda Divisional Secretariats divisions in the Ratnapura District, Kotmale and Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariats in the Nuwara Eliya District and sloped areas in Gampaha district are at risk of landslides.

Meanwhile, the DMC said three spill gates are opened at the Mausakelle reservoir and three spill gates opened at Laxapana releasing water at 11,500 Cubic per second and requested the people at down streams to be extra vigilant.

The Department of Meteorology issuing weather forecast at 12 noon today said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and fairly heavy falls about 50 mm can be expected at some places.

Several spells of showers will occur in Western province and in Galle and Matara districts.

Strong gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph can be expected over the island particularly in Central, North-western, North-central, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces and in Badulla, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.

Wind speed in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota and the sea area extending from Trincomalee to Batticaloa will be 50-60 kmph. These sea areas will be rough and can be very rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 70-80 kmph at times.

Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regards.
