* Allowances for teachers on exam duties to be increased - Education Minister

Aug 17, Colombo: Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that the Commissioner General of Examinations has been instructed to increase the allowances for the teachers and principals who are engaged in examination duties.

Issuing a special media statement today (17) regarding the false stories published on social media and web sites recently that steps are being taken to suspend wages of teachers during school vacations, Minister Kariyawasam said that legal action has been instituted against spreading false news.

The Minister pointed asserted that he will never act to reduce, but will uplift the facilities and privileges of the teachers, who make thousands of sacrifices to the children.

Minister Kariyawasam recalled that the present government increased the salaries of all public sector employees including teachers by Rs. 10,000 and he took measures to increase the allowance given to principals from Rs. 750 to Rs. 6,500.

The Minister further said that groups, envious of the massive projects launched by the government for the education sectors and their progress, are preparing agenda for narrow political gains by mudslinging to inconvenience the Ministry and himself.
