* Sri Lanka Railways call for retired train drivers and guards to immediately report for service
Thu, Aug 9, 2018, 11:15 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 09, Colombo: The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has requested the retired railway drivers and guards to report to the service at 6:00 a.m. on a contract basis as the railway strike launched by several trade unions yesterday afternoon continued today.

The Ministry of Transport has also canceled the leave of all employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) until the train strike is over. The SLTB has deployed additional buses to meet the excess demand of the commuters.

The Locomotive Operating Engineers and Drivers' Union initiated the unannounced strike from Wednesday 3 p.m. demanding to rectify their salary anomalies. Association of Railway Guards has also extended its support to the strike.

Meanwhile, a tense situation arose at the Colombo Fort Station as the inconvenienced commuters protested the sudden strike commenced by the railway trade unions without a prior warning.

Police have deployed Special Task Force to control the situation and secure the Fort Railway Station and its properties. It is suspected that some members of the trade unions may damage the railway properties, state media reported.
