Wed, Aug 8, 2018, 12:45 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 08, Colombo: Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero, who was sentenced by the Court of Appeal to six years rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court, will appeal against the punishment, the attorney appearing for the Thero informed the Court of Appeal today.

President's Counsel Manohara de Silva appearing on behalf of Gnanasara Thera told the two judge bench of Chairman Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Shiran Gunaratne that his client hopes to appeal the court ruling.

The President's Counsel requested to the Court to give him time to prepare submissions.

Accepting the request, the Bench ordered the Counsel to show cause on the 29th of this month.

President's Counsel Manohara de Silva also requested the Court to suspend today's ruling to take the Gnanasara Thera to the Welikada Prison until a decision is reached on the appeal.

However, the Bench said it is unacceptable and rejected the Counsel's request.
