Aug 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a Sri Lankan man who was attempting to smuggle in gold biscuits worth over Rs 3.2 million and an airport employee who assisted him.

The 51-year-old suspect, a resident of Gampaha, had arrived from Singapore by flight UL 303 at 4.30 pm yesterday (2).

The person who has assisted the suspect to take the gold biscuits out of the airport is an employee of a private cleaning service at the airport. He is a resident of Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo.

The passenger has given the 37-year-old employee 5 gold biscuits weighing 500 grams and worth Rs. 3.25 million. He was arrested at the departure terminal.

The exchange has been recorded on a security camera at the airport.

Customs officials are carrying out further investigations.
