May 27, Colombo: Due to the continuing adverse weather conditions 38,163 persons have been displaced in the Puttalam District, according to the district officials.
According to Puttalam District Secretary N.H. Chithrananda there are 237 Grama Niladhari divisions in the district and 10,538 families have been displaced by the adverse weather conditions.
District Disaster Relief Services Division, Divisional Secretaries and Grama Niladharis are engaged in providing relief services to the displaced persons sheltered at 93 safe places in the district.
The majority of the displaced in the Naththandiya Divisional Secretariat area and it is 11,256 persons.
District Secretary said a number of irrigation canals and many other canals have been destroyed by floods while the flood situation in the Mundalama Divisional area has been controlled after opening the Udappuwa estuary.
All small tanks in the district are spilling and there was a risk of breaches on levees of several tanks. Measures have been taken to repair them with the assistance of the Army, Navy and the Security Forces, the official said.
All the sluice gates of the Thabbowa reservoir have been shut down by the morning of 26th and there is no spill level in the Iriginimitiya reservoir.
By noon Sunday (27), transport on the Udubaddawa - Naththandiya road and in the Thummodara area has been hindered. District Secretary expects the situation will resolve in the next few days as the flood waters recede.
