* Sri Lanka Health Ministry considers increasing percentage of male nurses

May 25, Colombo: The Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says that attention has been paid to increase the percentage of males recruited to the nursing service.

Health Minister disclosed this during a discussion held recently with the Government Nursing Officers Association (GNOA) at the Ministry of Health.

Currently there are 31,000 nurses serving in the nursing service and there are about 7,000 vacancies.

The Minister asked the Deputy Director of Health Services Donald Murage to prepare a report focusing attention on the percentages other countries use in recruiting male nurses.

It was also discussed about the possibility of recruiting more male applicants who have applied for the nursing service at present.

The Minister also instructed the officials to take steps to increase the allowance given to the instructors at nursing schools from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000.

Discussing the official housing problem of nurse, the Minister said the Minister of Health stated that after the construction of the quarters for the doctors, the official quarters for the nurses would also be constructed.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Deputy Director Generals Sunil De Alwis and Donald Murage, President of the Government Nursing Association Saman Ratnapriya were present at the discussion.
