* Court orders to issue Interpol Red notice to arrest absconding ex-navy officer Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi

May 17, Colombo: The Colombo Fort Magistrate today ordered to issue a warrant through the International Police (Interpol) for the arrest of former Sri Lanka Navy Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi who is a suspect in the case of disappearance of 11 youths in 2008 and 2009.

Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered the police to issue the relevant red notice in English.

Accepting the submissions made by the legal counsel appearing for the aggrieved party, the Magistrate ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to arrest anyone in the Navy who has abetted Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi alias 'Navy Sampath'to escape, and produce them in court.

The Magistrate ordered the CID to arrest any other suspects in the case in addition to the suspects in custody and produce them before the court.

Two Navy intelligence personnel in custody over the case were further remanded until May 31.

Former Naval Media Spokesperson Commodore DKP Dassanayake and five others including three naval officers were arrested last year in connection with the abduction of 11 youths including six international school students and five university students in 2008 and 2009. Subsequent to their arrest, the suspects were remanded. They were granted bail on 9th January this year and released pending the case.

Navy Sampath was also one of the five suspects in the slaying of Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Nadarajah Raviraj in November 2006. However, the Colombo High Court last year acquitted all the suspects in MP Raviraj murder case.
