* Health Minister orders to rush high flow oxygen equipment to Karapitiya and Matara hospitals

May 17, Colombo: The Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has informed the Director General of Health Services, Dr. Anil Jasinghe to rush high flow oxygen therapy equipment to Karapitiya and Matara hospitals to expedite treatment for children suffering from a fast-spreading viral disease in the South.

The Health Minister considering the emergency situation has taken the measure in response to a request made by the pediatric specialist doctors in the two hospitals.

The high flow oxygen equipment are capable of delivering oxygen to children more rapidly and at high pressure, and the lungs contracted due to the disease can be reopened, according to pediatric specialists.

These machines are to be purchased under local purchase orders.

Meanwhile, the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has commenced an investigation into the spread of flu-like viral disease in the Southern Province.

The Health Minister meanwhile, has asked the public to adhere to the instructions given by the pediatric specialists in Karapitiya and Matara hospitals.
