May 16, Colombo: The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has arrested the former Kegalle District MP and Chairman of the State Timber Corporation Anuruddha Polgampola for failing to appear in court over a case against him.
He was arrested yesterday (15th) on a warrant issued for failing to appear in court for a case filed against him over financial fraud.
Polgampola was recently appointed as Chairman of the State Timber Corporation but removed from the post, within days of the appointment following the outcry against appointing a politician, who was accused of bribery and corruption.
Polgampola, who had obtained a contract to supply soil for development projects under the "Uthuru Wasanthaya" program of the last government, had defrauded around Rs. 8 million that had to be paid to the soil suppliers issuing an invalid check.
The soil suppliers have filed a case against him in the Kilinochchi court and he was arrested and remanded for several months. Polgampola, who was released on bail, has subsequently been evading the court.
In 2017, he was arrested by the Mirihana Special Investigations Unit over a case of financial fraud and several other fraud cases are also pending against him.
