* Minister advises Mayor to take legal action against national zoo for harmful waste disposal

May 14, Colombo: Provincial Councils, Local Government and Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha has advised the Mayor of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Stanley Dias to take legal action against the National Zoological Gardens for improperly disposing waste harming the residents' health.

Minister Faizer Mustapha gave this advice speaking at the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Regional Development Committee meeting held at the Dehiwala Divisional Secretariat today in response to a complaint raised by a Dehiwala Urban Council member.

The Council complained that the National Zoo is disposing all its waste to the drainage harming the health of the people living around the zoo.

The Minister advised the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Mayor to take legal action if the National Zoo fails to find a proper solution to the waste problem within two weeks.

The Minister further stated that the government does not hesitate to take legal action against any state or private institution discarding waste outside the legal framework.

Co-President of Regional Development Committee of Dehiwala Mount Lavinia Sunethra Ranasinghe, Mayor of Dehiwala Mount Lavinia Stanley Dias, Deputy Mayor Keerthi Udawatte, Dehiwala Divisional Secretary, Nalinie Subramaniam participated in the meeting.
