* Joint Opposition MP Dilum Amunugama summoned to TID over Kandy anti-Muslim clashes

May 14, Colombo: Joint Opposition Kandy District parliamentarian Dilum Amunugama has been summoned to the Sri Lanka Terrorist Investigations Division (TID) of police to question over the recent anti-Muslim attacks in Kandy.

MP Amunugama was asked to appear before the TID at 10.30 am on Tuesday, according to joint opposition MP Shehan Semasinghe told media.

As a result of several anti-Muslim attacks erupted in the early March two people died and more than 200 Muslim-owned shops and properties were destroyed. Four Muslim places of worship have been attacked.

The government stated at the time of the attacks that an opposition parliamentarian was involved in the attack. Although the government did not reveal the name of the MP, several local council members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) who were involved in the clashes in Kandy were arrested.

Meanwhile, 34 persons including Amith Weerasinghe, who were arrested on suspicion of being responsible for the attacks in Kandy, were remanded on May 28 by the Colombo High Court.

The Chinese government has approved a loan of USD one billion to Sri Lanka for the construction of the first phase of the Central Expressway.
