* Irrigation Engineer in charge of Parakrama Samudraya attacked while on official duty

May 12, Colombo: Irrigation Engineer in charge of the Parakrama Samudra in Polonnaruwa Asela Udayanga has been attacked yesterday by an unidentified group in the area of the Second Ela in Polonnaruwa while he was on an official duty, the police said.

The engineer injured in the attack has been admitted to the Polonnaruwa general hospital for treatment.

The assault had been carried out when a group of officials including the Irrigation Engineer had gone to remove an unauthorized structure erected in an irrigation reserve near the second Ela in Polonnaruwa yesterday morning.

The injured Irrigation Engineer in his statement to the police has said that he can identify the people who attacked him and there was a UNP candidate, who contested for the Polonnaruwa Urban Council at the last local government elections and lost, was among them.

Polonnaruwa Police are conducting investigations to arrest the suspects who are said to have carried out the attack.
