* Sri Lankan court sentences Pakistani man to death for smuggling 8 kg of heroin

May 11, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today sentenced a Pakistani national who was found guilty of smuggling a large stock of heroin into the country.

Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja sentenced to death Pakistani national, Zaid Mohamed, who was accused of smuggling over 8 kg of heroin into the country by concealing the stock inside a freight container of imported potatoes.

The Attorney General had filed indictments against the Pakistani national in connection with smuggling 8.35kg of heroin inside a container of potatoes imported into the country between the time period between November 23 and December 8, 2010.

Following a lengthy trial, the High Court Judge decided that the allegation made against the 48-year old accused was proved without a reasonable doubt and sentenced to death.
