* UNP and UPFA decide to jointly establish power in Galle MC

Mar 22, Colombo: The elected members of the United National Party (UNP) and the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) for the Galle Municipal Council have unanimously decided to jointly establish power in the local government body with the members of the UNP offshoot, the United National Freedom Front (UNFF).

The members of the three parties have decided to join hands to set up the Galle UC at a meeting held today (22) at the Home Affairs Ministry.

Accordingly, the elected councilors unanimously decided to appoint UNP councilor Jilith Nishantha as the Mayor of the Galle Municipal Council and Deshapriya Liyanage of the UPFA as the Deputy Mayor.

There are 35 members in the Galle Municipal Council. There are 14 members elected from the UNP and three members were elected from the UPFA. The team, including one councilor from UNFF will have 18 members in the Council and forms a majority.

The Galle Municipal Council is scheduled to meet tomorrow (23) for the first time and since no single party has won the majority the mayor and the deputy mayor will be decided by a vote.

This meeting between the two parties was held after the UNP team took their oaths at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the UPFA councilors at the Foreign Employment Ministry this afternoon.

Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena, Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem, Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara and Parliamentarian Imran Maharoof also participated in the discussion.
